Coachella Music Festival: Musicians, Bands, Live Music And Tickets

Last spring, well over 100,000 people flocked to the desert of Indio, California, for a three-day weekend of music and art. Throngs have done so since 1999, but never have they been so large. The desert is a scenic setting for experiencing an incredible gathering of talent. The lineup of musicians and bands is so massive and dense, it is truly impossible to see and hear it all. Indeed, it is ill advised to try. The 2007 Coachella Music Festival featured five separate main-stages, on which there was seldom a vacancy. Coachella is best experienced by getting lost at the art and music festival. Wander around with eyes and ears open, and let them serve as a guide.

This is not to say that ignorance of the set times is recommended. Every stage must have its headliner, so music festival attendees have five destinations from which to choose, at which their wandering may finish each of the three nights. The Coachella Stage, the music festival's primary venue, featured Bjork, Interpol, Tiesto, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and a reunion of Rage Against The Machine, as headlining bands in 2007. A New York Times review of the 2007 Coachella Music Festival suggests that the wandering should probably stop around sunset, a fantastic time to get settled in for a stage's evening of live music. Reviewer, Ben Ratliff wrote, "…when the sun lowers, the air feels fresh, the sky seems endless, and music sounds better… This is when bands put on their best game." One such "sunset" performance came courtesy of another Coachella reunion performance, by the Jesus and Mary Chain.

The desert music festival has developed a reputation for reuniting bands. In years past, the music festival has featured reunion performances from Siouxsie & the Banshees, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Pixies and Jane's Addiction, just to name a few. A RollingStone.com blogger suggests that Coachella's reunion bands translate into the sale of tickets for the live music festival. The blogger describes the music festival: "…that blissful musical Bacchanal in the desert, has made a habit of nabbing headliners that speak to a specific generation's unrequited, nostalgia-fueled desires." It is as if Coachella organizers instinctively know what music fans' desire, and then deliver irresistibly, attracting thousands to the desert.

Individuals likely to submit to Coachella's irresistible attraction in 2008 are going to require tickets. Ideally, a three-day pass and a reserved campsite are desired. Both, however, will require early action to secure. Three-day passes for the live music festival are in limited supply, and onsite campsites sell out in short order. Of course, there are offsite campsites and hotels available, and single day tickets for the music festival will be available through Ticketmaster. Keep in mind that Coachella has sold out, or come close to it, since 2004. 2007 one-day ticket prices were $85, and the three-day passes were $249, so expect to pay a little more in 2008. There is not yet a date for 2008 Coachella tickets to go on sale. Nor is the lineup for its musicians and bands available. However, the dates for the 2008 art and music festival are April 25, 26 and 27. For those who do not wish to rely on the magical attraction of the desert to keep them informed about the upcoming music festival, Coachella.com is the best place to go for news and announcements regarding the 2008 event.

Though there are many unknowns regarding the next Coachella, this should not dissuade fans of live music. If the past performance of the music festival organizers is any indication, next years talent will be nothing short of spectacular, and a surprise band reunion or two should be expected. And, thanks to the desert climate, a rain-out is highly unlikely. The desert is as hospitable as it is beautiful, and it is the perfect venue for this annual event.
