While Woodstock has been known as one of the biggest music festivals of all time, the Isle of Wight Festival has been underrated and underestimated throughout the years. The Isle of Wight Festival was a three year monumental experience in the late 1960s. While its existence was cut short, it was revived again in the beginning of the new millennium and continues the tradition every year.
The festival takes place in England on a small island called the Isle of Wight. The music festival started in 1968, where world renowned musicians played all weekend long. The Isle of Wight took place on an August weekend, and transportation to the island was by ferry boat. The interesting fact about this music festival is that the island itself only had a population of 100,000 people, causing much concern for England officials. It was virtually and physically impossible for them to offer safety measures for all 600,000 people, and to keep the event under control. After its debut, the festival lasted for only two more years.
The 1970 Isle of Wight festival was one of the largest, documented music festivals of all time. To the surprise of most, it even beat Woodstock in attendance with 600,000 music lovers. This music festival had world famous musicians and bands such as The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Jethro Tull to name a few. People would come from all over the world for this music festival, until its discontinuation after the 1970 Isle of Wight festival. The Isle of Wight festival was stopped due to the Isle of Wight act passed in England. This act stated that no more than 5,000 people were allowed to gather for the music festival on the island, making this event completely worthless.
The Isle of Wight festival was brought back to life in 2002. It is now at a different part of the island, and is not the same music event as it had been known in the past. Since 2002, the Isle of Wight festival has continued to occur every year, but barely has the same amount of music fans as in the past. It takes place at some point during the summer months, and again features famous bands and musicians. Between 2002-2007, some bands and musicians who performed at the Isle of Wight festival are the Rolling Stones, Counting Crows, The Who and Coldplay.
Isle of Wight festival tickets can be purchased online or through various ticket agencies such as TicketMaster. For the entire weekend plus camping fees, expect to pay around $250. Without camping fees, tickets around $200. There are special fees for children as well. The Isle of Wight festival continues to grow in popularity as each year passes, hoping that someday it will become the music festival it once was.
