Gone are the days of the free-spirited, pro-love rock concert with an amassing of fans stumbling through the hazed, multi-day festival. Or maybe not. Though Woodstock it is not, Bonnaroo music festival still lives up to the name of its predecessor, or rather its activities. The original Woodstock took place in an era of political and social conflict, yet still managed to promote peace, brotherly love and proactive resolutions.
In essence, what makes that so different from today? Though the times have clearly changed and the simplicity of Woodstock is long gone, Bonnaroo music festival still invokes the feeling of a good, old-fashioned rock concert, where everyone loves their neighbors.
Bonnaroo music festival takes place during four, hot summer days in Manchester, Tennessee. It has been a yearly effort since 2002, and occurs in mid-June. Tens of thousands of music lovers congregate on the 700-acre farm in Tennessee, all with the same plan of action: pitch a tent, see and hear live music acts, and above all have a great time. The bands and musicians billed for Bonnaroo music festival are anything but typical. The great draw of Bonnaroo lies in the medley of different styles of music. Bonnaroo music festival features mainly contemporary music, a huge umbrella which includes rock, classic rock, hip-hop, electronica and jazz, to name a few.
Aside from live acts, Bonnaroo music festival features an assortment of attractions and activities across a broad scope. There is an arcade and movie theater for those looking from a musical interlude. The many comedy clubs featured in either This tent, That tent, or the Other tent draw huge groups. The silent disco is one of the oddest, and most attended, attractions at Bonnaroo music festival. Concert-goers wear 70s-style headphones into the psychedelic tent where multi-colored lights dance across the walls and floor. Music can be heard only through these headphones, hence the quiet of the disco. The silent disco goes on until sunrise, so there is always time for the experience.
While wandering the Bonnaroo music festival, attendees are likely to run into some Tennessee natives selling various products and merchandise. These craftsmen and artisans sell their unique trinkets, and usually for some small change. Running into local craftsman is common, considering the walk between stages can be far. There are two main stages, What stage and Which stage, where the live music magic happens. This tent, That tent and the Other tent are subsidiary venues that supplement the main stages. The three tents are also where smaller bands perform, so there is a good chance of catching lesser known musicians or impromptu jam sessions as well.
The diversity [of Bonnaroo] is the ultimate form of communication. Stated well by moe.s' bandmate Rob Derhak, Bonnaroo is the epitome of diverse music acts. Some classic acts to have once graced the festival include The Police, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Stevie Nicks. Prominent rock bands of today also play the Bonnaroo music festival, including The White Stripes, Tool, and Radiohead. Hip-hop musicians featured at the 'Roo include Common and The Roots. Classic jazz artists and electronica specialists round out the melting pot of live music at Bonnaroo music festival. Perhaps the wide array of musical styles is the reason Rolling Stone named Bonnaroo music festival as one of the 50 moments that changed rock and roll.
Bonnaroo is a Cajun slang word for 'really good time,' and every year the festival continues to live up to its name. Though an event such as this does not come cheap; tickets for Bonnaroo music festival range from $125 to $215 in a series of tiers. However, since most of the tiers sell out rather rapidly, attendees can pay upwards of $300 for tickets. With 80,000 tickets sold out for the 2007 Bonnaroo music festival, apparently the steep prices are warranted.
Though the days of Woodstock and free-love have long since passed, Bonnaroo music festival still aims to keep this mentality alive. Bonnaroo music festival provides a sanctuary for music lovers to unite yearly and celebrate life. With a revival of simpler times when all that was needed was good music and friends to have a rocking good time, Bonnaroo music festival achieves just that.
